The Lightning network is no longer a distinct possibility. Ordinary people are using it in El Salvador, almost 2 million of them every minute of every day. The growth in less than 30 days has been extraordinary and while there have been many issues with the ATMs and connection problems, these are just technical difficulties that can be fixed.
The lightning network itself can carry the load of a small country transacting day in and day out.
